When selling a product online, we want to offer our customers as much relevant information about the product as possible. Understanding how to use Shopify product metafields And most importantly, the ability to easily display dynamic metafields data within your Shopify themes (we will talk more about this later). As part of the update, one of the big major changes was the native ability to add metafields (before this you needed to use an app to add this functionality). In 2021, Shopify made some big updates to how the platform worked - this update was called 'Online Store 2.0'. You would have also heard a lot about 'Shopify Online Store 2.0' so I just wanted to quickly touch on this as it is connected with Shopify metafields. What is Shopify 2.0 and how does it relate to metafields? In this post, we are going to focus specifically on Shopify product metafields. So in a similar sense to metadata offering Google more information about your webpages, Shopify product metafields offer your customers more information about your products. So for example with your products, you may want to show your customers extra information in addition to the default fields offered by Shopify, like the dimensions of a product. The role of Shopify metafields is to allow you as the store owner to add extra information to parts of your store like your products, collection, orders, and customers. This helps Google better understand what your webpage is about and display it for relevant search terms. The role of metadata is to provide search engines - like Google - extra information about a certain page on your site. And while meta descriptions and Shopify metafields are different concepts, they serve similar purposes for different parts of your website to provide extra information. It's a common word when we talk about website SEO, for example, the phrase meta description. The word meta is one you would have heard quite a bit on the web. Meta, not as scary as it sounds (except in the case of Facebook). It's a concept that is important to understand as it will help you customize your products and offer a better shopping experience for your customers. If the product being edited is tagged with 'Womens', then all the products will be tagged with 'New Arrivals' and 'Womens' only.If you run a Shopify store, you may have heard the term 'metafields' thrown around quite recently. Under the New UI, all the products will be unified having the same tags as the product I'm editing. Under the Old UI, I can select all 5 products and add the new tag at once, all current tags stay the same. I'd like to add 'New Arrivals' tag on 5 products, 2 of these products are already tagged with 'Mens' and 3 with 'Womens' I'd like to add new tags and keep the current tags as they are. The tag function has changed, surprisingly for the worse! The columns are not persistent, every time i open the bulk editor i have to select the columns i wantĪfter having to open the 6-7 columns i normally use, the last columns are no longer visible without scrolling, despite the fact the the columns visible are far wider than necessary for the data in them The columns are fixed width and I can't see my whole product title for editingĪny item with 4 tags shows the first 2 and a "+2", despite the fact there is easily room for 5 tags in the ridiculously wide fixed width column There is nothing good about the new format, frankly the page is now useless The Bulk Editor now loads 250 product records instead of 50 and has infinite scrolling as opposed to pagination.If a change does not save, the Bulk Editor will inform the merchant which product failed to save and why. The Bulk Editor now validates saved changes.Merchants can now drag and select multiple cells to edit at the same time.Merchants can now add/remove multiple columns from view at once using the "Columns" button found on the top right of the Bulk Editor.The benefits of the new bulk editor and why we made this change are: They sincerely appreciated the feedback about this and if there is any other feedback you want to share, please let me know. Our product team confirmed that the arrangement of the columns and the column widths have changed but they are planning on continuing to update the new workflow for ease of use.
